The Algorand mainnet has upgraded to protocol version 5.0.0, introducing Falcon-1024 post-quantum account signatures, a resource-based transaction fee model, and AVM v13 for expanded smart contract capacity. As of September 1, the network has processed 500,000 transactions signed with post-quantum schemes, combining native Falcon-1024 accounts and State Proofs.
The go-algorand 5.0.0 stable release was published on August 12, following a beta on August 7. The consensus upgrade required a 90% threshold of node runner approval to activate. Support crossed 75% on August 13, passed 80% on August 14, and reached 90% on August 15. After the cooldown period, the upgrade went live on mainnet on August 22. The Foundation reported that over 1,500 node runners completed the upgrade within the first four days.

Algorand Foundation open-sources AC2, a blockchain-agnostic protocol for verifiable agent approvals using WebAuthn and FIDO2
The Algorand Foundation has open-sourced AC2, a protocol designed to improve how autonomous agents handle approvals and credentials. The protocol uses WebAuthn and FIDO2 to ensure that signatures are generated on a user's device rather than within the agent's runtime, preventing credential theft if the agent's environment is compromised.
