Algorand Foundation open-sources AC2, a blockchain-agnostic protocol for verifiable agent approvals using WebAuthn and FIDO2

Covered by 3 sources

The Algorand Foundation open-sourced AC2, a protocol for verifiable human approvals and credential isolation designed for AI agents running on or interacting with Algorand. AC2 addresses two problems with existing agent approval flows: a user's approval is not cryptographically tied to their identity, and the agent holds the user's private key directly within its runtime. The protocol is blockchain-agnostic, meaning it can operate alongside networks beyond Algorand.

AC2 resolves these issues by generating signatures on the user's own device using WebAuthn and FIDO2, keeping the private key outside the agent's execution environment. The protocol also incorporates DIDComm for structured messaging and WebRTC for real-time communication between components, as described in the developer-facing documentation.
