x402 standard for AI agent payments added to Algorand Mainnet in February
The Algorand Foundation added the x402 standard to Algorand Mainnet in February 2026. x402 uses the HTTP 402 'Payment Required' response code to let AI agents pay for resources over the web without a human in the loop. The design targets high-frequency, sub-cent transactions that resolve with instant finality.
The Foundation is running a Global x402 Challenge with a prize pool of $100,000 and 500,000 ALGO.
