Algorand v5.0.0 ships with post-quantum accounts, expanded AVm, and x402 payment developments

The Algorand Foundation released v5.0.0 of the protocol during the week of August 9, 2026, introducing post-quantum accounts and an expanded Algorand Virtual Machine. The update also coincided with the release of Pera Wallet 7.0 and several developments related to x402 payments.

The Foundation's own ecosystem roundup, published August 15, covered all three items together as part of its weekly summary. The v5.0.0 release brings the first post-quantum account support into the protocol itself, while the expanded AVm adds new capabilities to the execution environment. No further technical detail on either item appeared in the roundup beyond these names.
